UserTesting

Get paid to browse websites and apps as a real user and share what you think

UserTesting is the world's leading usability testing platform. The biggest companies on the planet pay to watch real users interact with their websites, apps, and prototypes before launching them publicly. Your job is to navigate, complete specific tasks, and narrate out loud what you are thinking and feeling as you go. No technical knowledge needed — you just need to express yourself clearly. Each test lasts 15 to 20 minutes and pays $10 on average.

How to get started step by step

  1. 1
Sign up and complete the practice test. Go to usertesting.com and create your free account. Before receiving real tests you will need to complete a practice test that evaluates your ability to speak while navigating. This is the only entry requirement: if you pass this test you can start receiving real opportunities.
  2. 2
Fill in your demographic profile accurately. UserTesting assigns tests based on your profile: age, gender, country, income level, occupation, devices you use, and shopping habits. The more detailed and accurate your profile, the better you will match the filters companies set. Do not fabricate data — companies are looking for real, specific profiles.
  3. 3
Set up the required equipment. For desktop tests you need a computer with a microphone and a stable connection. For mobile tests you need to install the UserTesting app on your phone. Some tests also require a webcam to record your face while navigating, so having one increases the opportunities you will receive.
  4. 4
Accept tests quickly when they arrive. Test notifications go out to many users at once. The first to accept get the test. Enable email and in-app notifications so you do not miss any opportunity. Speed matters more than most people expect.
  5. 5
Talk throughout the entire test without stopping. The main mistake new testers make is going silent while navigating. Companies pay to hear your thoughts: say what you see, what you expect, what confuses you, and what you would do differently. A tester who verbalises well receives more invitations to exclusive tests with higher pay.
  6. 6
Get paid via PayPal after 7 days. Each completed and approved test is paid 7 days later directly to your PayPal account. The standard rate is $10 for a 20-minute test. Live interviews or longer tests can pay between $30 and $120.

Pros

  • No technical knowledge needed: just browse and talk
  • $10 per 20-minute test, with higher-paying tests available
  • Secure PayPal payments 7 days after completing
  • Established platform used by the world's largest companies
  • Access to live interviews paying between $30 and $120

Cons

  • Test availability is irregular and depends on your demographic profile
  • Competition to accept tests is high: you need to react quickly
  • Rejected or low-quality tests are not paid
  • Income is not stable: it can vary significantly month to month

Tip to maximize earnings

The key to receiving more tests is talking a lot and in detail during each session. UserTesting values testers who verbalise well — if your first batch of tests gets good internal ratings, the system will send you more opportunities. Avoid silences, monotone delivery, and generic answers. Act as if you are explaining the website to someone who cannot see it: that is the level of detail companies value most.
