What Prolific is and why it pays more than the rest
Prolific is, in my personal experience, the survey platform that pays best per hour of all the ones I have tried. And I am not just repeating what I heard: on my real dashboard I have 69 studies submitted and more than 80 pounds earned (around 95 euros), answering studies that often take less than 10 minutes. We are not talking about cents here like in other apps: there are studies that pay $13, $14, and even $15 an hour.
Why? Because Prolific is not a normal marketing survey site. It is a platform where universities, academic researchers, and tech companies publish genuine scientific studies: psychology tests, product evaluations, and even studies comparing your decisions with those of artificial intelligence, of which there are a huge number right now.
The key is that Prolific forces researchers to pay a minimum per hour. They cannot give you a 20-minute survey for 30 cents like on other sites: if a study does not pay a decent rate, the platform simply does not allow it. That is the big difference.
An honest note about signing up
Registration is not always open to every country at all times. Sometimes there is a waiting list depending on the demand for participants in your area. If you get put on a waitlist when you sign up, it is not a scam or an error: it is their quality-control system. Sign up anyway, because spots keep opening up.
The Studies tab: where the money is
Studies is the tab where you will spend the most time: this is where the studies available to you appear at any given moment. Look at the information on each card, because it is extremely transparent: it tells you how much the study pays, the estimated time, and best of all, the equivalent hourly rate.
For example, a 4-minute study that pays $1.7 works out to almost $15 an hour. Or one from Atlassian, a huge tech company: 8 minutes, $2, more than $13 an hour. With that figure you decide in two seconds whether a study is worth it, without doing any maths. My personal rule: below $8 or $9 an hour, only if there is nothing better; above $12, I jump in without thinking.
The good studies vanish fast: react quickly
The advice that comes up most in forums: each study has a limited number of spots and, once they fill up, it disappears. The good ones, the $15-an-hour studies, can run out in minutes.
That is why veterans do two things. First, keep the browser tab open while doing other things, with notifications turned on so the platform alerts you when a new study appears. And second, react fast: if you see a good study, get in first and read it afterwards. You can return it with no penalty if it does not convince you, but the spot is already yours.
Unlock audio studies (they pay more)
Prolific has a special category of audio studies, flagged with an "Unlock more audio studies" banner. In them you record your voice reading phrases or having a conversation, and they usually pay above average. To access them you just have to do a small microphone quality test, once.
Do it on the first day: it takes five minutes and unlocks an entire category of better-paid studies. I have been paid 8 pounds for audio studies, and there are not many platforms where a quick task pays that.
About You: the step that multiplies your studies
Pay attention, because this is the most important tip of all. In the About You tab, Prolific asks you questions about yourself: demographics, education, family, finances, beliefs, location... On my profile I have absolutely everything completed: the 41 priority questions and every category at one hundred percent.
Why is it so important? Because Prolific works the opposite way to other sites. Here you almost never get disqualified halfway through a survey: researchers filter beforehand who can see their study, using precisely these answers. If your profile is half-done, you simply do not show up in the filters and no studies reach you. Every question you answer is another door that opens.
In fact, when someone complains on Reddit that "no studies reach me", in 90% of cases the community answer is the same: complete the entire About You.
Be honest and consistent (or lose the account)
Prolific compares what you answer in your profile with what you answer inside the studies. If your profile says you have no children and in a study you say you have three, the quality alarms go off and you can get suspended.
There is no trick in lying to qualify for more studies: they catch you, and a Prolific account, once lost, cannot be recovered. Answer honestly once and forget about it.
Submissions: your history and the "Screened out" that still pays
In the Submissions tab you have your complete history: how many studies you have submitted, how many have been approved, and the total earned. In my case: 69 submissions, 52 approved, and a total of 81 pounds and 79 plus 29 dollars and 66 (here you get paid in the researcher currency, which we cover in the payments section).
Each study goes through a status: when you finish it, it stays pending, and the researcher has a window to review and approve it, usually within hours or a few days.
And here comes one of the things I like most and that almost nobody mentions: you will see studies marked as "Screened out" with a reward anyway. It means you were removed from the study because you did not fit the profile they were after... but you got paid a compensation for the time invested regardless. Compare that with typical survey apps, where they kick you out on the third question and you leave empty-handed. That detail says a lot about how serious the platform is.
Return the studies you cannot finish
If you start a study and cannot finish it, do not let it die by timeout: return it manually with the return button. A returned study does not penalize you; one abandoned without warning looks bad on your quality metrics.
And if a researcher rejects a submission and you think it is unfair, you can message them from here. Always do it politely, explaining your case: forums are full of rejections reversed simply by asking the right way.
How and when to cash out: PayPal and a low minimum
In the Balance hub you see your approved balance, and here is a Prolific quirk: the balance is split by currency. Since researchers are from different countries, some pay in pounds and others in dollars, and your balance accumulates in each currency separately. Do not worry: when you withdraw, everything goes to your PayPal and PayPal handles the conversion to euros automatically.
The withdrawal minimum is 6 pounds, very reasonable: two or three good studies and you are there. You hit Cash out, choose PayPal, and the payment usually arrives quickly. No strange points systems or confusing conversions: real pounds and dollars, straight to PayPal.
The only honest caveat: only PayPal is available as the main method, so you need a verified PayPal account. And a tip that applies to any platform: if you plan to move the money from PayPal to your bank, wait to accumulate a bit more than the minimum, because moving very small amounts to a bank account sometimes causes issues depending on the country.
The 7 veteran Prolific tips
The complete cheat sheet to get the most out of Prolific, summarizing what we have seen and adding the final tips:
1. Complete About You 100% on day one
It is the multiplier for everything else. Without a complete profile, you do not show up in researchers filters and barely any studies reach you.
2. Do the audio test
It unlocks microphone studies, which pay above average. Five minutes once, for the entire life of the account.
3. Keep the tab open with notifications on
Good studies vanish in minutes. Keeping Prolific open in the background with notifications is the difference between catching them and missing them.
4. Look at the hourly rate, not the total price
A $2 study can be better than a $5 one if the first takes 4 minutes and the second 40. Always decide by the hourly equivalent.
5. Never use a VPN or lie on your profile

6. Watch out for attention checks
These are the trap questions like "select the third option" that researchers add to check you are reading. Failing them is the number one reason for rejections, so read every question carefully.
7. Take advantage of the best time slots
Studies tend to be published during morning and midday hours in the UK and the US. If you are in Europe, the mid-morning to mid-afternoon window is usually the busiest.
Conclusion: is Prolific worth it?
For me, Prolific is the survey platform with the best time-to-money ratio out there right now: it pays real, decent hourly rates, it compensates you even when it screens you out, it cashes out via PayPal with a low minimum, and on top of that the studies are often genuinely interesting to answer. The downside? Studies are not infinite and you have to stay alert to catch the good ones.
